ARB Internship Opportunities

Internship -- Part-Time (10-15 hrs/week), Unpaid

American Repertory Ballet (ARB) internships are for individuals that want to gain practical experience in the non-profit arts world. Interns are given the opportunity to learn how each department contributes to the whole of ARB by working directly with department heads on various projects necessary to the success of the organization.

ARB is currently seeking interns to work on various initiatives and projects in our Marketing, Development, Educational Programming, Production, and Wardrobe departments. Interns will work under the Director of each specific department to develop projects, goals, and timelines best-suited to the organization’s needs and the intern’s skill set.

American Repertory Ballet is a non-profit organization with three main programmatic areas: the professional dance company; the Princeton Ballet School with 1,500 students at three central New Jersey locations; and the Access &Enrichment activities, which include DANCE POWER, an in-school dance education program; On Pointe, a free in-studio enrichment series; and other educational initiatives in the community. 

Sample projects for each department include:

Marketing Internship:


  • Assist in the production of advertisements, online and print displays, and promotional videos
  • Experience with Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator and iMovie or equivalent

Public Relations/Communications:

  • Assist in the promotional efforts undertaken by the organization, from social media and online initiatives to press releases for print media
  • Strong oral and written communication skills; understanding and experience of Twitter, Facebook, YouTube

Skills Required:

  • Interest in and knowledge of ballet
  • Understanding of American Repertory Ballet's organization and mission
  • Strong writing and communication skills
  • Attention to detail with ability to multitask
  • Experience in Microsoft Office programs especially Excel and Word, and online research
  • Experience with photo and video programs a plus. 

Development Internship:


  • Provide general administrative support of department initiatives
  • Perform data entry and maintenance of the fundraising database Raiser’s Edge

Special Events:

  • Assist in the organization and execution of special events for the organization from Nutcracker performances to the Annual Gala to other smaller cultivation events
  • Availability to work more hours and outside of the normal work day such as evenings weekends for our special events

Skills Required:

  • Strong writing and communication skills
  • Attention to detail and able to work independently
  • Experience in Microsoft Office programs especially Excel and Word, as well as online research
  • Experience with databases a plus
  • Interest in and knowledge of ballet
  • Understanding of American Repertory Ballet's organization and mission

Educational Programming: 


  • Observe teaching artists in our DANCE POWER program and learn how to bring curriculum to life
  • Learn how educators assess the impact and effectiveness of our programs.  
  • Assist in the compilation of data relating to the assessments of our program


  • Research potential community collaborations and engagements
  • Develop materials for ARB’s library of online dance education resources
  • Represent the organization at community events
  • General administrative tasks, as necessary.

Skills required:

  • Understanding of ARB’s organization and mission
  • A passion for dance education
  • Strong writing and research skills
  • Strong computer skills (Microsoft Office suite)
  • Knowledge of and enthusiasm for dance education
  • Upbeat personality


The Costume/Wardrobe intern will report to the ARB wardrobe manager and the PBS wardrobe manager. The intern will help with fittings, alterations, and maintenance of costumes for ARB productions, Nutcracker, and the PBS school performance. He/she may also be asked to assist the wardrobe manager(s) at performance venues, including load-in prep, dress and tech rehearsals, performances, and load-out. Interns will assist in keeping the shop organized and preparing costumes for cleaning and storage post-production. He/she may also have the opportunity to work closely with designers to help build costumes, head pieces, and accessories.

Skills Required:

  • Basic hand-sewing and machine sewing skills
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Positive, friendly, fun, and energetic
  • Must be available a minimum of 5-10 consistent hours per week, for three (3) months minimum from start date
  • Students studying/have studied costume technology, theater, fashion design, or related field preferred


Production interns will work for the Production Manager and with other members of the production staff, including, but not limited to, the Technical Director, the Company Manager, the Stage Manager, and the Lighting Supervisor as needed. Production interns should be ready to be hands-on in rehearsal and in the theater. Production interns will be asked to take on projects including archiving, organizing storage, arranging hospitality, guest artist transport, pulling and organizing color, posting schedules, adjusting paperwork, and managing props. Production interns should have a firm grasp of Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word as well as the full suite of Google Apps and will receive training pertaining to how to use the Company paperwork descriptions. Production interns will only be provided per diem when staying overnight and will only be provided travel reimbursement when they are using their vehicles for Company purposes. ARB does not reimburse for traveling to and from the internship.
